What are the chances of getting lung cancer if you are a smoker or non-smoker?

Men: the life time risk of ever getting lung cancer in men is 7.58%
so in a group of 1,000 men, there will be about 76 with lung cancer. About  24% of men smoke, so in this group of 1,000 men, there will be 240 smokers and 760 non-smokers

About 90% of lung cancer in men is caused by smoking, so 90% of the 76 cancers ( or 68) will be found among the smokers and only 8 cases among the non-smokers. So the risk of getting lung cancer if a man smoked would be approximately 68/240 or 28% and for non-smoking men 8/760 or only 1%

Women: the life time risk of ever getting lung cancer in women is 5.72%
so in a group of 1,000 women, there will be about 57 with lung cancer. About  19% of women smoke, so in this group of 1,000 women, there will be 190 smokers and 810 non-smokers

About 79% of lung cancer in women is caused by smoking, so 79% of the 57 cancers ( or 45) will be found among the smokers and only 12 cases among the non-smokers. So the risk of getting lung cancer if a woman smoked would be approximately 45/190 or 24% and for non-smoking women  12/810 or 1.5%
